Frequently Asked Questions

Common Core State Standards Initiative:

Many of our customers have been asking how we will be addressing the Common Core State Standards. Our consultants are currently assessing our Math products to ensure they cover all the requirements of the Common Core State Standards Initiative and we will be making any changes necessary. Also, we are currently developing ELA products written specifically to the Common Core standards for elementary through high school grade levels. Please notify us via email here if you would like to be added to our email list to receive updates on our CCSS efforts.

State Standards

How do I get my state standards to show up in Examgen?

Standards can be activated to show up within the Examgen program while you create your exam as well as print out on your answer key with each correlating question. To activate this feature, in the Exam Settings menu, make sure the "Print Origins" box is checked. On the menu bar of Examgen, click on "Database" and "State Standards." Select the standard type you want ("CCSS" for Common Core State Standards, "TEKS" for Texas state standards, "NY" for New York standards, etc.) and the question bank(s) with the selected standard type will show on the right. Click OK and your standards will now be activated.

Do you have alignments to Common Core State Standards (CCSS)?

We currently have alignments to CCSS in our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math question banks. Our consultants are currently assessing our middle and high school math products to determine if any changes are necessary, then we will be aligning those products to CCSS. Our ELA products will be written to the CCSS and answer keys generated from these question banks will have Common Core correlations to each question.

Editing Capabilities

Can I change questions in the question bank?

Yes. Using our Personal Library editing features, you can copy and make changes to a question. You can change the wording, add or remove a graphic or add answer choices to a question. These amended questions will be saved in a "Personal Library" and you can use them over and over again in your future tests.

Can I write my own questions?

Yes. With the Personal Library, you can develop multiple choice, short answer, or constructed response questions for your needs. You can even make your own special instructions, notes to students, or headings.

I have my own personal pool of questions and graphics. Can I insert these into the question bank?

Yes, in the Personal Library editing features, you can copy and paste your questions into a new personal question bank. Your original questions must be in .txt file format and your graphics must be in .bmp file format.

Creating PDFs of Exams

How do I create a PDF version of my exam?

Many educators would like to post PDFs of exams on their school's websites for students to download and print.  In order to do this, you will need Acrobat Distiller, Adobe CreatePDF, or another PDF creation program.  If your school does not offer the Distiller program on its computers, we recommend PrimoPDF.  PrimoPDF is a free PDF creation program that can be downloaded and installed here.  To create the PDF of your exam, go to File in the Examgen program, then Print, and then choose the PDF printer name from the list of available printers (ie Acrobat Distiller, PrimoPDF, etc.).  The PDF is viewable in Acrobat Reader or any other PDF viewing program you use.

Building Site License

I notice that Examgen's question banks are building site licensed. What does this mean?

Examgen question banks are site licensed to a building. As a licensed Examgen customer, you can install the software on any computer in that building, therefore, there are no limitations on the number of computers that can have the program.

In addition, any teacher in that school building can take the CD home and install the test generator software on his/her home computer and laptop.

Can I make copies of the manual of test questions?

Yes you can and we very much encourage this! A .PDF of the manual comes with the Examgen question bank you install in the following location: C:\Examgen\Examgen Use Files.

We also encourage that you make a copy of the Examgen program CD and keep the original copy in one location if for some reason you need to install the Examgen program on your computer in the school again.

Troubleshooting

I have Windows 7 on my computer and Examgen won't install correctly.  How do I fix this?

You will need to install the latest version of the Examgen software.  Visit our downloads page to submit a request for the latest installer.

When I double click on my saved exam shortcut, it will not open. Why not?

The Examgen program only allows saved exams to open from the program itself. You must start the Examgen application and click on File and Open Exam. Select your saved exam (click once) through the file explorer window that pops up. After highlighting your saved exam, click on Open and your questions will show in the Examgen Exam Window.

Supported Platforms

Do you offer a web-based version of Examgen? Does your desktop version support Mac OS?

Our web-based product is in development and will support both Windows and Mac OS.
